The Aacharya
The Spiritual Leader • The Divine Guide • The Source of Inspiration
Who is an Aacharya?
In the Hindu tradition, an Aacharya is a spiritual leader appointed to guide devotees on their journey towards ultimate salvation. He is regarded as a divinely ordained guide whose authority is rooted in scripture and confirmed by spiritual experience.
An Aacharya holds the unique right to initiate disciples into the sect and to expound the doctrines of the Vedas. He teaches not only through the knowledge of the scriptures, but also through the wisdom drawn from his own spiritual realisation.
As stated in the Yagnavalkya Smriti (Chapter 2, Verse 19), the principal role of an Aacharya is to initiate disciples through the sacred thread ceremony and to bestow upon them the gurumantra. In this way, the Aacharya stands as an ideal figure — a source of inspiration, guidance, and exemplary conduct, whose footsteps are followed by millions of devotees.
Lord Swaminarayan's Three Resolutions
To establish the faith across the world and to share with His devotees the divine bliss of His true form, Lord Swaminarayan made three solemn resolutions:
Build Temples
To build temples and install therein the idols of the deities.
Establish Aacharyas
To establish Aacharyas as the spiritual leaders of the sect.
Compose Scriptures
To compose sacred scriptures that would reveal the greatness of the Swaminarayan Sampradaya.

The Two Divine Thrones
To administer the rapidly growing sect in an organised manner, Lord Swaminarayan divided it into two divisions, each headed by its own Aacharya:
Northern Division
Southern Division
On the sacred day of Kartak Sud Ekadashi, Vikram Samvat 1882 — Tuesday, 21st November 1825 — in the presence of thousands of saints and devotees, two Aacharyas were formally installed:
Param Pujya Ayodhyaprasadji Maharaj
Param Pujya Ayodhyaprasadji Maharaj, son of Shri Rampratapbhai, was installed as the Aacharya of the Ahmedabad division.
Param Pujya Raghuvirji Maharaj
Param Pujya Raghuvirji Maharaj, son of Shri Ichharambhai, was installed as the Aacharya of the Vadtal division.
From Shikshapatri
Lord Swaminarayan Himself recorded this divine arrangement in His handwritten Shikshapatri (Verse 3):
भ्रात्रो रामप्रतापेच्छारामयोर्धर्मजन्मनो:।
यावयोध्याप्रसादाख्यरघुवीराभिधौ सुतौ॥०३॥
"Born to Dharmadev, my brothers Rampratapji and Ichcharamji had two sons, named Ayodhyaprasad and Raghuvir, whom I have accepted as my adopted sons and establish as the Aacharyas of all Satsangis.".
A Living Tradition
Through these two divinely established thrones, the spiritual lineage instituted by Lord Swaminarayan continues unbroken to this day. The Aacharyas of the Ahmedabad and Vadtal divisions remain the spiritual successors of this sacred tradition — guiding, inspiring, and initiating devotees the world over, just as Lord Swaminarayan ordained two centuries ago.
